TacDesk Works Offline: Why Connectivity Shouldn’t Stop Your Guards

The Reality of Mobile Signal on Security Sites

Security guards don’t always work in places with perfect mobile signal. Underground car parks, basement storage areas, rural construction sites, and buildings with thick walls can all create dead zones. If your guard management app stops working every time signal drops, guards lose trust in the system and revert to paper.

TacDesk is built to handle intermittent connectivity gracefully.

How Offline Mode Works

TacDesk uses a service worker — a piece of technology that runs in the background on the guard’s phone — to cache essential pages and data. When connectivity drops:

  • Cached pages load normally — guards can navigate between tabs without errors
  • Shift information remains visible — upcoming shifts and current assignment are available
  • Actions queue automatically — reports filed or checkpoints scanned while offline are stored locally
  • Automatic sync on reconnection — when signal returns, queued data syncs to the server without any manual action

Auto-Recovery

We’ve recently improved offline reliability with automatic page recovery. Previously, if a guard navigated to a page that hadn’t been cached while offline, they’d see an error. Now, the app detects when connectivity returns and automatically refreshes the page — no manual intervention needed.

This is particularly important for guards moving in and out of signal dead zones during patrols. The app adapts seamlessly to changing connectivity without the guard having to think about it.

What About Clock-In?

GPS clock-in requires connectivity to transmit location data to the server. If a guard is in a dead zone at clock-in time, the app queues the clock-in event with GPS coordinates and transmits it when signal returns. The server records the original timestamp, not the sync time, ensuring accurate records.

Built for the Real World

Offline capability isn’t a feature we added as an afterthought. It’s fundamental to how TacDesk is built. Security guards work in challenging environments, and their tools need to work in those same environments. A management app that fails when signal drops isn’t fit for purpose.

Offline mode is available to all TacDesk users — it works automatically with no configuration needed. Try the demo or visit tacdesk.co.uk to get started.
