For ACS compliance, this is important. Security guards are among the most common lone workers in the UK. Working alone, often at night, in locations that may attract criminal activity, they face risks that technology can significantly mitigate. Modern lone worker solutions go far beyond the traditional “phone check-in” approach.
GPS Location Tracking
Real-time GPS tracking through a mobile app provides continuous visibility of a guard’s location. If an incident occurs, management knows exactly where the guard is and can direct emergency services immediately. GPS trails also provide evidence if a guard’s movements need to be verified during an investigation.
For the technology to work as a safety tool, someone needs to be monitoring it. Establish clear procedures for who monitors guard locations during shifts and how they respond to irregularities.
Automated Check-In Systems
Scheduled check-in prompts sent to the guard’s phone replace manual call-round systems. The guard confirms they’re safe with a single tap. If a check-in is missed, the system automatically escalates: first a reminder, then an alert to the supervisor, then a full emergency protocol.
This is more reliable than human-managed call rounds, which are susceptible to controllers being busy, forgetting, or accepting excuses for missed calls. Automated systems are consistent and create a complete audit trail.
Panic and Duress Features
A discreet panic button — either physical or within the guard’s mobile app — allows them to raise a silent alarm without alerting an aggressor. The system should capture the guard’s GPS location at activation and alert the designated response contact immediately.
Some systems offer man-down detection using the phone’s accelerometer. If the device detects a fall and the guard doesn’t respond to the subsequent prompt, an automatic alarm is raised.
Choosing the Right Solution
Evaluate lone worker solutions based on reliability over cost. A system that fails when needed is worse than no system because it creates false confidence. Test thoroughly in the actual environments where your guards work, including areas with poor mobile signal. Consider battery life, ease of use under stress, and whether the solution integrates with your existing guard management platform to avoid managing multiple disconnected systems.
