An App Without the App Store
Guards and managers have been asking for a native app experience — an icon on their home screen, full-screen operation, and fast access without opening a browser first. Today, TacDesk delivers exactly that through Progressive Web App (PWA) technology.
What Is a PWA?
A Progressive Web App looks and feels like a native app but runs through your phone’s browser engine. The practical difference for users is almost zero — TacDesk appears as an app icon on your home screen, opens full-screen without browser bars, and works offline for key features.
The advantage over a traditional app store download? No waiting for app store approval, no forced updates, no storage-heavy downloads. Updates happen automatically in the background.
How to Install
Installation takes about 10 seconds:
On Android
- Open TacDesk in Chrome
- Tap the “Install” banner that appears, or use Chrome’s menu → “Add to Home Screen”
- TacDesk appears as an app icon on your home screen
On iPhone
- Open TacDesk in Safari
- Tap the Share button → “Add to Home Screen”
- TacDesk appears as an app icon on your home screen
Offline Support
TacDesk’s PWA caches key pages so guards can access essential features even when they lose mobile signal. If a guard is in a basement car park with no signal, they can still view their shift information and navigate the app. When connectivity returns, any queued actions sync automatically.
Push Notifications
Once installed as a PWA, TacDesk can send push notifications for shift assignments, schedule changes, check calls, and other alerts — just like a native app. Guards don’t need to have TacDesk open to receive notifications.
Why Not a Native App?
We chose PWA technology deliberately. Native apps require guards to find, download, and update an app through the store. PWAs install instantly, update automatically, and work on every phone regardless of operating system version. For a workforce that uses diverse phone models — many of them budget devices — this universal compatibility matters.
PWA installation is available to all TacDesk users. Log in to your TacDesk instance and follow the install prompt, or visit the demo to try it yourself.
